A Dangerous Myth: Accounting is so easy anybody should be able to do it!
Maybe you’re unlucky enough to work for someone who believes this myth, or to be accountable to a board of directors populated with people who think it's true. They know what they want and they don’t understand why it’s so complicated and time-consuming for you to get it for them. You begin to think it’s true, too.
You’ve begun to believe you should be able to absorb more and more demands on your time and your skills without arranging for some help. You catch yourself thinking you’ll work overtime “just one more week” and then you’ll surely be caught up. Unconsciously, you expect yourself to be a Lone Ranger – able to see a simple solution and accomplish what’s needed with one silver bullet, without help.
The truth is, you are probably handling a wide range of responsibilities and accounting tasks that in larger companies would be spread out over several departments. There’s a lot you need to stay on top of – almost more than one person can be expected to do.
Take a moment and ask yourself, “Is what I’m doing working to my satisfaction?” If the answer is “no”, “maybe”, or “I don’t know”, ask yourself, “Do I know where to get help?”
If you find yourself leaving work more than once a week feeling as if you’ve accomplished too little, or if you need to work overtime regularly to get the necessities taken care of, I want to help.
